A new campaign to encourage people to swap their power socket adapters for safer alternatives is being launched by the City of Edinburgh Council at Leith Asda on Friday 1st February.
The initiative, run by Trading Standards officers, is aimed at older people and those on low incomes. This follows research which found that 92% of these adaptors examined had safety issues which could potentially cause electrically-related fires.
To encourage safer electrical use in the home, the Council is giving away ‘bar’ socket extensions, which are safer because they prevent excessive weight being placed on the socket. The campaign is funded by the Electrical Safety Council.
‘Swap shops’ will be set up at six locations across Edinburgh. Come along between 11am – 2pm on the following dates in February:
• Friday 1st: Asda Leith Superstore, 2 Sandpiper Drive, EH6 6QL
• Monday 4th: North Neighbourhood Office, 8 West Pilton Gardens, EH4 4DP
• Tuesday 5th: South Neighbourhood Office, 40 Captain's Road, EH17 8HN
• Wednesday 6th: East Neighbourhood Office, 101 Niddrie Mains Drive EH16 4DS
• Thursday 7th: South-West Neighbourhood Office, 10 Westside Plaza, EH14 2ET
• Monday 11th: Drumbrae Library Hub, 81 Drum Brae Drive, EH4 7FE
Trading Standards Officers will be present to provide guidance on electrical equipment safety.
A maximum of two extensions per household are available, although there is no limit to the number of adaptors that can be handed in for disposal.
Rock the House is Parliament’s competition to find and celebrate up-and-coming British musicians and the live music venues which support them.
As in previous years, the competition has several categories (best solo artist, best band, best under 19 solo artist, best under 19 band, best music video and best small live music venue) which are now open to entrants.
Unlike in previous years, all entries should be made online at www.rockthehousehoc.com.
Entries must be made by 1st March 2013. Once entries close, I will be able to listen to all of the submissions made from people in Edinburgh West and will nominate my favourite in each category.
For those which make it through to the next round, a judging panel made up of international music industry experts will choose the finalists from the entries put forward by MPs throughout the UK.
On 26th June the finalists will compete live at The Bedford with an awards party at the House of Commons.
If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact me.
I look forward to listening to the entries!

What’s happening?
The City of Edinburgh Council is making changes to the green household, brown garden and grey lidded food waste bin collections. They will now be collecting all of these bins on the same day each week. Food waste weekly and the green household bin and brown garden bin on alternate weeks.
If you are affected by these changes, you will receive a bin collection calendar soon. Please keep this handy, ready for the change.
Why is it changing?
The changes will help increase recycling rates in Edinburgh. Recycling is easy and is something we can all do. It helps protect our environment by sending less waste to landfill, and saves energy, time and money which we can reinvest into local services.
We all need to work together to meet national recycling targets. In Edinburgh we’re aiming for a 50 percent recycling rate in the next two years.
Where can I find out more?
The City of Edinburgh Council will be happy to answer any further questions that you may have.
You can contact the council on 0131 529 3030 or email waste@edinburgh.gov.uk or visit the City of Edinburgh Council website.
The Spartan Sprint is taking place at Dalmeny House. You can find out all you need to know on the What's on Scotland website.

A quiet street in Gogarbank may resound to the shouts of rebellion. The leader is threatening to chain herself to the gate if the Group, Save Our Suntrap (SOS), is evicted before its community based plan for the garden can be realised.
SOS Chair, Isobel Lodge, said:
“A For Sale sign for housing development at Suntrap has been erected despite protests from many sources. This is against the ethos of the original, famous donor and would deprive the community of a valuable educational and social resource. We have an alternative plan and must resist!”
Charming charity garden, Suntrap, a leafy oasis of 3 acres, situated in greenbelt at Gogarbank village, west of Edinburgh, is under imminent threat of sale by the owners, National Trust for Scotland and Oatridge College.
Millbuies House, part of Suntrap, was recognised by Historic Scotland for its unique qualities and was Listed in February 2012, yet Oatridge College want to proceed with selling it for development!
However, the Scottish Government can object to the proposed change of use from educational to domestic. Edinburgh Council supports the plan of the SOS Group and is appealing to the Scottish Government. There has been considerable local, political and press interest in the campaign.
The passion of the Group is undiminished. The Group believes that with just a little more time, it can succeed. Resistance to a private sale for profit only is strong.
Suntrap Garden was the property of philanthropist, George Boyd Anderson, who commissioned an extraordinary eco house, Millbuies, to be built there in the late 1950s. He designed his garden in a series of rooms. He left his property for the education of the people of Scotland. Ownership was divided between the NTS and the local authority but from 1983, the Garden was utilised and managed by Oatridge College. It established a high reputation as a centre of horticultural learning for adults and children with learning difficulties in addition to other classes and services.
In June 2010, Oatridge College decided to withdraw from Suntrap Garden due to changes in funding. When the top part of Suntrap reverted to the ownership of the NTS in October 2010, NTS’ management claimed it was of no heritage significance despite its history and they planned to dispose of it.
Following Oatridge’s withdrawal, the Save our Suntrap (SOS) Group was formed from the national and local organisations which used Suntrap. The Group is led by Friends of Suntrap, the first ever NTS Friends group which was established in 1977. For the last 2 years, the Group has been striving to establish ownership of the Garden either through a lease agreement or by raising funds to buy the property. Other charities serving a wide range of health and social needs are interested in using the facilities. The aim of the Group is to continue to manage the Garden under a Charitable Company in accordance with the principles of the benefactor. These would include offering therapeutic horticulture, education and promoting Millbuies House as a heritage centre.
The Garden is maintained by volunteers and open to the public on Tuesdays and Fridays (10.30 to 16.00) and at weekends (12.30 to 16.00).
You can find out more on the Suntrap website
If you would like to join the campiagn please contact Isobel Lodge, Chair of Save Our Suntrap and Secretary of Friends of Suntrap on 0131 441 3934 or by email at isobel@lodgec40.freeserve.co.uk
